2K Hires Popular Battle Royale Producer to Revitalize Challenged Action Game Ambitious Title

The renowned publisher has secured Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to direct the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently working on the forthcoming third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.

Leadership Transition Comes After Poor Reception

Brinkman takes on the role of studio head at the development studio following the dismissal of previous head Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' disappointing early showing last autumn.

On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer updated staff about this decision through an internal memo, which stressed that early feedback sessions had revealed the requirement for a clearer direction.

The president expressed that the team is now overhauling Project Ethos with a renewed vision, aiming to satisfy community desires.

A Pattern of Strategic Acquisitions

This announcement echoes a similar step taken by the publisher in the summer, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to assist with the beloved franchise development group.

Here is the full text from Ismailer's announcement:

Dear Team—

I know you all just completed your town hall - I trust you’re as thrilled as I am with the good news. Last time I sent you all a note, I stated the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most dedicated and innovative designers we have had the chance to collaborate with - and we’re excited for that relationship to endure.”

With your dedication and versatility, particularly over the past twelve months, you repeatedly show that.

The gamer responses from last autumn’s the game playtest was informative. It validated the potential of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had refinements needed. It highlighted the need for a more distinct brand.

It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve come. You embraced the feedback to heart and overhauled Project ETHOS with a revitalized vision - one that’s ready to deliver on its potential to our audience.

Our confidence in Project ETHOS grows every day. To advance the outstanding development you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce Ben Brinkman as the new Studio Head of 31st Union. After several months of discussions, Ben starts with us on next week.

Ben’s management and expertise in the competitive gaming space is extensive, having spent the past decade and a half producing and leading some of the most well-known franchises in gaming, for example Call of Duty: Black Ops, and lately, Apex Legends.

I invite you all in welcoming him next week. We are all excited to persist seeing the evolution of the game in the months to come.

The President

Background of the Incoming Leader

Brinkman presently holds the role of executive producer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. He earlier was employed at major gaming companies in diverse development positions on the Call of Duty games, and, earlier in his career, had periods at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Game Information and Vision

The upcoming game was announced in last year together with a community playtest. At the time, 31st Union described the game as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an innovative evolution on the category."

"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the game's pitch states. "Face the competition with new abilities, risks, and challenges that shift every round. Will you leave securely with your valuable rewards? Or aim high, risk it all, and trust your group can earn top ranking? The decision is in your hands."

Project Ethos has not yet received an official debut schedule or supported systems, but players can expect additional details as creation progresses.
