Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US central bank lowered interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The number of positions created to the market in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, which he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that indicated that prices are going up, although slowly. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
