Government Official Says MoD Looking at Potential Threat from Vehicles from China, as Personnel Advised to Refrain from Secret Talk in Cars.

A defence official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently examining the potential threats posed by Chinese vehicles, and staff have been told to avoid talking about secret information in all cars.

Safety Guidance for MoD Personnel

During a recently aired appearance on a radio station, Luke Pollard addressed reports that Ministry of Defence officials have been instructed not to discuss classified material while riding in Chinese vehicles.

The minister said that the MoD is “investigating” cars from China within its fleets, but emphasised that security is a concern in every modern cars.

We have a fleet of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones represent a very small number.
But regardless of if you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug Ministry of Defence devices into their vehicle, not to have discussions at a secret classification in any car, because of the growing threats of eavesdropping that exist in all automobile, to only have those confidential conversations in protected areas. This is a wise and reasonable thing for everyone concerned about security.

After it was put to him that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using all cars from China, the minister replied: That is exactly what we’re investigating at the moment.”

Broader Security Context

The announcement comes as reports from Norway and Denmark have alerted the UK to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could allow China to switch off buses and bring disruption to public transit.

Additionally, a Russian intelligence vessel has been shining laser beams at RAF aircrew, labeled a “extremely risky” act by defence officials.

This broader security environment highlights the importance of strong protocols and caution in all aspects of official operations, including vehicle use to discussions habits.
