As any major honors show approaches, there’s always a demand for introducing of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and fill the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.
My colleague made the case for a horror game category. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: There should be an award type for logic-based games.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types actually cover numerous genres, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything that year
- Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Only a few logic titles barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent small games, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most engaged experiences worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.
The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. You could fill a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification in important events. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
